Oh The Holidays…
I don’t know if this is just life as a Naperville salon, or if it is unique to my clientele, but my holiday appointments started to book in July. Clients whipped out their calendars and organized this aspect of life. Knowing everything is better when you have good hair.
I know, the holidays are challenging and it takes more than great hair to survive them. A sense of humor is necessary to make it to the New Year. So here are my top 3 funny Holiday Happenings:)
1. Thanksgiving dinner at my mother’s complete, she was counting her silver pieces as she put them away. Distressed by a “missing” dinner knife, she asked to look in our pockets to see if the knife “fell” into one of our pockets. Really?!! You think we have a silver knife in our pockets and didn’t notice, or maybe we were trying to steal the silver set one piece, one holiday at a time. The knife was in the sink, covered by dishwater.
2. Christmas Eve dinners at my cousins house. Always fun, tons of food. For every dish on the table my mother offers a lower calorie version. ”Have you ever tried making this with skim milk?” ” Do you know the dark meat has more fat and calories?” “Do you have spray margarine?” ” I’d hate to have to work off the calories YOU just ate!”
Hey, Mom, can you pass the wine?
3. Christmas at my house, growing up, 1974-1980. My parents still married, but hate each other. The dining room table can be expanded to seat 20. This required putting leaves in the table. Every year the same scene. My parents wait until the last minute to expand the table. The extended family has arrived, eating appetizers, drinking. My father and some unsuspecting volunteer lifting the leaves lining up the inserts for the table. My mother directing, ” LINE UP THE NIPPLES, DON’T BREAK THE NIPPLES OFF THE LEAVES! D*#% it, Bill, YOU ARE GOING TO BREAK THE NIPPLES!”
I am not sure why, but hearing your mother shriek the word nipple every Christmas for 6 years has scarred me and my cousins for life.
So another year, another Holiday, another story:)
