OHHHH No Oprah

The November issue of Oprah magazine has an article on ” how to color your hair at home”  Let me give you the scoop on home hair coloring.

1. It can be done, but its difficult.  The color on the box means virtually NOTHING in relation to the color you will achieve.  Hair color formulas start with knowing your hair color and what you want to end up with.  If you are a brunette and pick a blond shade, you are going to end up orange.

2. IF you pick the correct shade, the first application should turn out fine.  It’s the subsequent applications that will MESS YOU UP.  Permanent color CANNOT be applied over your whole head every time.  Applying color to your outgrowth is difficult at best.

3. Because color results depend on the color you start with. I am often color adjusting, or making slight adjustments in the color to compensate for hair that has been bleached out in the sun, or just plain faded.

4. Most colors mixed in salons are at least two shades mixed together. I have some colors that have five tones mixed together.

So, just cause Oprah says, does not make it so.  Talk to your hairdresser first.  An $8 box of color could end up costing hundreds to fix! Your hairdresser will give you the scoop on what you can and can’t achieve at home.
